Thompson Rules at Mt. Lawn

New Castle, IN (June 13, 2009) - Jason Thompson came back to Mt. Lawn Speedway for the second CRA Street Stock race at the famed speedway for the Gibo Chew Memorial 75 Saturday night. He started on the outside of the front row, took the lead on the second lap and was never seriously challenged as he dominated the race.  A native of nearby Shirley, IN Thompson showed the way around his home track, with the racing for second through fifth tight.  Knightstown’s Jeff Lane finished second, Chuck Cook, New Castle, third, Joe Beaver fourth and Lewisville’s Calvin Parham fifth.

"It helped starting up front, but the car was great, it was really good for the race."  Thompson commented.  "I need to say thank you to my Dad, brothers, TCI, Dave Pigg, and the crowd that came out tonight.  This is my home track and I love coming back for a race."

The night featured a tribute to Gibo Chew who owned or maintained cars that raced at the track for almost 40 years. Due to the dedication of some of the CRA Street Stock drivers, and the many businesses that worked together to present the event the purse was raised and there were several special prizes. The race was presented by: CP Racing Engines, McGunegill Engine Performance, Marcum's Welding, US Auto Group, Claborn Auto Sales, Zipper's Bar, Payne Auto Parts, Carl Smith, Tom True Auto Sales, Adams Enterprises, Steve Ellis Race Cars, National Road BP, Van Hoy Oil, Adams Enterprises, Hopkins Towing, Knepley's Competition Graphics, Knightstown Sweet Shop, and the Knightstown Banner. Thompson earned the National Road BP bonus for leading the seventh lap in honor of Chew’s car number 07.

The CRA Street Stocks were making their second all time stop at Mt. Lawn, with Noblesville’s Joe Beaver, the winner of the last trip, setting fast time and a new track record with a lap at 17.415 seconds. He then drew an eight for the invert putting Jim Crabtree, Jr. on the pole with Thompson on the outside of the front row.

Crabtree jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to hold it with Thompson taking over on the second lap. The racing was furious at the opening of the race with cars being caught and lapped early. Pre-race favorite Beaver was moving up through the traffic when he went off just at the end of caution period with a flat tire. Luck was on his side as a spin involving several cars made a restart of that lap necessary and Beaver was able to return, but at the end of the field.

Beaver moved up to finish fourth pushing third place finisher Cook for the position. Lane finished second despite running out of brakes. "It’s tough to run here without brakes, we didn’t have the best car today, but we finished second." Lane commented. Thompson also earned the Van Hoy Oil halfway leader award, the Turn One Most Laps Leader Award and a TCI Automotive Bonus.

Brian Hopkins beat a tough group of drivers to win the Razzles Dash for the CRA Street Stocks.  Larry Matillo took the first heat, with Rich Boyer winning the second and Jason Thompson the third.
