Salem, IN (June 3, 2009) – CRA Officials
today announced the CRA Street Stock event at Mt. Lawn Speedway on
June 13 will be a $1000 to win race and named The Gibo Chew Memorial
75 after a local racing legend. Chew owned or maintained cars at Mt.
Lawn Speedway for almost 40 years. His generous spirit and sense of
competition are well known in east central Indiana. The race will be
presented by a number of local businesses
and racers including: CP
Racing Engines, McGunegill Engine Performance, Marcum's Welding, US
Auto Group, Claborn Auto Sales, Zipper's Bar, Payne Auto Parts, Carl
Smith, Tom True Auto Sales, Hopkins Towing, Knepley's Competition
Graphics, and The Knightstown Banner.
"Gibo meant a great deal too many racers in East
Central Indiana with Mt. Lawn as his home track. He worked on a lot of
different race cars and owned many himself, for his sons and other top
racers." Remarked R.J. Scott, Managing partner of Champion Racing
Association. "When I was first getting started in racing, and
didn't know much about cars, he helped me out by installing a partial
front clip on my car after a rough weekend of racing and charged me
next to nothing...he was just that way...wanted to see people make it
to the race track each and every week and was willing to do whatever
it was he could to help them. It’s only fitting that this
special race at Mt. Lawn honors his memory and dedication to racing."
The dedication of this race came about due to the
suggestion of CRA Street Stock competitors, with Calvin Parham leading
the charge. "I wanted to help out to honor Gibo. Without him I would
not be racing. When I was a kid I used to hang out with my uncle
Jackie Smith (who drove a car for Chew at the time) at Gibo’s garage
and that is where I caught the racing bug. When I started racing he
helped me, rebuilt
carburetors
and helped me with the car. He seemed to have helped everyone. Gibo
always had a street stock at Mt. Lawn. What better way to honor him
than naming a race at Mt. Lawn for him."
Chew also gave the racing bug to his sons, Gib,
Jeff, and Eddie are all CRA officials, who helped work on cars or
raced at Mt. Lawn and Mick drove for several years. Jeff, Eddie and
Mick all won many races at Mt. Lawn in their Dad’s cars. "We are
humbled to see people come together like this to honor Dad in this
way." Gib Chew, Jr. stated.
This will be the second time the CRA Street Stocks
have raced at Mt. Lawn with Joe Beaver winning the first trip in 2006.
A full field is expected with some of the best CRA Street Stock
drivers including Joe Beaver, Rich Boyer, Bret Miles, Jr, Brian
Hopkins, Eric Evans, Jason Thompson, Jeff Lane, and many others
expected to enter.
The evening will also feature UMRA 30, midgets and
the Compact Challenge with the Mt. Lawn Hornets and Vore’s Welding and
Steel CRA FWD Compacts competing against each other. Three great
divisions on one night at Mt. Lawn Speedway for just $10, adults and
